Thurman safety stair platform in yellow powder coat, 4 ft x 4 ft grip strut landing with handrails at a truck scale deck
Site Safety

Safety Stairs

Model: 153720T

Step across onto the deck from a 4 ft x 4 ft landing

Drivers and technicians get a fixed way on and off a truck or rail scale deck, with handrails on the platform and stairs. High-visibility yellow powder coat marks the access point in a lane where trucks and loading equipment move. Stringers mount parallel or perpendicular to the deck, so one assembly fits either approach. The landing sits at deck height, and a 7 in. grip strut overhang forms the step across.

Two heights are cataloged: item 153720 at 23 in. with three steps, and item 163392 at 18 in. with two. Steps are 4 ft wide by 11 in. deep, in 14 gauge galvanized grip strut. Stringers are 0.25 in. A36 plate, and the frame and handrails are A36 steel. Field-drilled leg angles give plus or minus 1.5 in. of leveling.

Features & benefits

4 ft x 4 ft grip strut platform

A level landing at deck height, so the move onto the scale is a step across, not a climb.

Steps 4 ft wide by 11 in. deep

Full-width treads in 14 gauge galvanised grip strut, which drains and grips when wet.

Two heights: 23 in. three-step, 18 in. two-step

Item 153720 and item 163392 match the two common scale profile heights.

Plus or minus 1.5 in. elevation adjustment

Leg extension angles are field drilled to level the platform against the deck as built.

A36 steel frame, stringers and handrails

0.25 in. A36 plate stringers, A36 angle frame, A36 square tubing frame and handrails.

High-visibility yellow powder coat finish

Marks the access point in a lane where trucks and loading equipment move.

Modular base frame, stringers either way

Stringers mount parallel or perpendicular to the scale platform to suit the site.

7 in. grip strut overhang at the deck edge

Extends past the 4 ft x 4 ft frame to form the step between scale deck and platform.

What's included

  • 4 ft x 4 ft base frame
  • L2 x 2 leg extension angles, undrilled, with approximately 2 in. of levelling variation

  • One 7 in. wide 14 gauge galvanised grip strut plank and overhang brackets
  • Grip strut stair treads
  • Platform handrails and stairway handrails
  • L4 x 3 x 0.25 in. x 4 ft angle tab for anchoring to the foundation

The technical picture

The safety stair platform gives drivers and technicians a fixed way on and off a scale deck. The platform measures 4 ft x 4 ft and the steps are 4 ft wide by 11 in. deep. Two heights are cataloged: item 153720 at 23 in. with three steps and 500 lb, item 163392 at 18 in. with two steps and 400 lb.

Step and platform tread is 14 gauge galvanised grip strut, and step stringers are 0.25 in. A36 plate steel. The frame is A36 angle, frame and handrails are A36 square steel tubing, and the finish is a high-visibility yellow powder coat.

The base frame is modular, so the stair stringers install parallel or perpendicular to the scale platform. Leg extension angles are field drilled, giving plus or minus 1.5 in. of elevation adjustment for levelling. A 7 in. wide grip strut overhang extends past the platform to form a step between the scale and the stairs.

  • Rub rail cut-out configurations for driver egress

    156202 / 156207 / 156227

Required where the scale carries rub rails. Three configurations are available, each with an opening for driver egress on the SSC or scale house side. The rub rail opening begins approximately 8 ft from the module end on 20 ft modules and 9 ft 8 in. on 23 ft modules. Dual rub rails are quoted at order.

  • Safety stairs foundation drawing

No charge. The safety stairs foundation drawing is available on request. Obtain it before the foundation is poured; the anchor tab is field drilled to suit.

  • Non-standard configurations

Other configurations are available on request. Quoted case by case. Item numbers are assigned by size and configuration at quotation.

Questions

Specifier & operator FAQ

Which height should I order?

Match the stair platform height to the scale profile height. Item 153720 is 23 in. with three steps at 500 lb; item 163392 is 18 in. with two steps at 400 lb. Determine the scale profile height and the differential to the platform height first, so step heights come out acceptable. Elevation then adjusts plus or minus 1.5 in. for levelling.

Do the stairs work on a scale fitted with rub rails?

Yes, using a rub rail cut-out configuration. Three are published, product numbers 156202, 156207 and 156227, each leaving an opening for driver egress on the SSC or scale house side. The rub rail opening begins approximately 8 ft from the module end on 20 ft modules and 9 ft 8 in. on 23 ft modules. Dual rub rails are quoted at order.

How do the stairs anchor to the site?

An L4 x 3 x 0.25 in. x 4 ft angle tab is marked and drilled on site at the correct elevation, then used to anchor the platform to the foundation. The safety stairs foundation drawing is held on the intranet. Obtain it before the foundation work is scheduled.

Is field drilling required during assembly?

Yes. The L2 x 2 leg extension angles arrive undrilled with approximately 2 in. of variation for levelling the base frame on the sub-base. Drill 9/16 in. holes at the elevation the site needs, then bolt the legs to the levelled frame with the supplied 1/2 in. hardware. The anchor tab is also field drilled.

Can the stairs approach the deck from either side?

Yes. The base platform is modular and the stair stringers install parallel or perpendicular to the truck scale platform. Stringers are handed, left and right, so orient them before bolting up. The 7 in. grip strut overhang always faces the scale, forming the step between deck and platform.

Do the stairs affect the scale's legal-for-trade approval?

No. Safety stairs are site access equipment with no weighing element, so they carry no NTEP Certificate of Conformance and no Measurement Canada approval. Neither approval is implied by the other in any case. The approvals on an order rest with the scale and the indicator.
